A Look Inside Phenom: Not Your Ordinary Shop

Uptown Minneapolis, May 14, 2010 — 4 months ago, craft paper covered the windows at 2829 Hennepin Ave. and passerby’s have been left to wonder what madness is hiding within.

Behind all that paper, the crew at Phenom has been working feverishly to turn their vision into something real, something truly special. I’ve been very blessed to have had the opportunity to take part in the transformation, lending a hand when I could, standing by in awe most often.

On the eve of their soft-opening, we spent the night at the shop enjoying good company and all that has been accomplished over the past several months. Before I give everything away I’ll share with you a few photos from late last night. No dialogue, just a glimpse at what is sure to be something extraordinary.

Congratulations to the entire Phenom Family and a special tribute to our dude, Max Live. The heart, soul and genius who’s been on a perpetual grind behind the paper since day one.

Slow down kid, you earned it.

With almost a full week of spring under our belt, I thought I’d share with you a few items to keep you looking and feeling your best this season.
In reality, none of these items are imperative to one’s survival, but for the sake of a headline, let’s roll with it.

Enjoy.

SUPER “PEOPLE” SUNGLASSES
A classic pair of sunglasses comfortable for any occasion are a must this season. Italian eyewear company Super reveal a new model from its upcoming collection for Spring/Summer 2010. The “People” frame features another familiar retro style silhouette from Super with slight adjustments made to the traditionally flat top. The Super “People” is a slightly smaller-framed yet meticulously designed piece of unisex eyewear. A timeless frame featuring the highly coveted Carl Zeiss lenses.

FILSON WEEKEND DUFFLE
You must have a duffel bag in a perfect weekend size. This bag will, quite literally, leave you high and dry because the canvas is oil treated and the leather is 100% vegetable tanned for maximum water resistance. Filson then adds the snap closure and leather work of a higher caliber than the stuff in your car. The end result is a bag that will always look good – rain or shine.

APC NEW STANDARD RAW
A nice pair of denim that can be dressed up or down in any case. The New Standard was created by A.P.C.’s founder Jean Touitou in 1978. His intention was to create the perfect raw jean by stripping away all details. He created a classic straight leg in raw Japanese selvage denim inspired by the 501 fit from Levi’s. A.P.C.’s run big and will stretch out, so buy two sizes smaller than your regular size for the best fit. For the best aging results wear for six months before washing.

RALPH LAUREN SEERSUCKER SHORTS
Classic-fitting golf short, tailored in a lightweight cotton seersucker for handsome preppy style out on the links. Lose the fruity belt and untuck the shirt and they’ll wear just as well with a graphic tee and some sneakers.

ONTOUR FISHERMEN’S FRIEND
A fisherman at the seaside. Ontour crosses the borders between streetwear, fashion and product design and mixes strong eye-catching graphics with more sophisticated, subtle garments. One of my favorite pieces from arguably the best collection of the season, men’s and women’s. Unfortunately, its almost impossible to find in the states. Wah.

AIR JORDAN VI WHITE / VARSITY RED
A picture is worth a thousand words, or something. The white/varsity red Air Jordan VI is set to release on June 12th of this year and is certainly going to garner as much attention as its black counterpart that released a short while ago.

3SIXTEEN UTILITY SHIRT – WHITE COTTON
A well crafted, white, utility shirt should be a staple in any wardrobe. This long sleeve shirt shares the same characteristics as their previous utility shirts, including a crossed back yoke, asymmetrical pocket flaps, herringbone twill sleeve straps, and a hidden 3sixteen embroidery underneath the front placket. Its the details that count.

TANNER GOODS STANDARD BELT – NATURAL/NICKEL
Toss out your plaid D-ring belt, I don’t care if you’ve had it since the fifth grade. The Standard belt is Tanner Good’s signature product, emphasizing classic, utilitarian styling. Each belt is constructed from 11 oz. vegetable dyed English Bridle leather, and features a nickel-plated roller buckle and keeper set. The edges are burnished and waxed by hand. Each belt is hand-made in Portland, Ore. and stamped with their signature makers mark.

PENFIELD HUDSON WAX SPRING JACKET
Always be prepared for the elements. Penfield’s Hudson Wax Cloth is a densely woven, 65/35 poly-cotton blend with an environmentally friendly dry wax impregnation, making the material not only windproof and water-repellent but also extremely durable. This hard wearing fabric wicks moisture effectively away from the body and is the perfect solution for life in the open. Due to the nature of the wax impregnation, the surface of the fabric may appear marked; these natural imperfections after time will enhance the overall look of the garment.

WHITE MOLESKIN NOTEBOOK
Whether journaling about life’s intricacies or drawing bongs and bubble letters, do it with class. Moleskine is a brand that identifies a family of notebooks, diaries, and city guides: flexible and brilliantly simple tools for use both in everyday and extraordinary circumstances, ultimately becoming an integral part of one’s personality.

NIKE SB STEFAN JANOSKI PACIFIC BlLUE/WHITE
With a simple, casual build, the Janoski is a great spring shoe that can be worn with shorts or pants. A vibrant pacific blue makes up most of the base, while a white swoosh and white shoelaces give it a nice, color contrast. To compliment these attributes, this SB Stefan Janoski is finished with a white, vulcanized rubber sole. Not for everyone, but a nice look nonetheless.

Wear sunscreen and be nice to people.
