The Sneaker Culture

I’m typically not one to post other customizers’ work on this site, since frankly speaking, the vast majority of what is out there is very, very lame. However, we are some equal opportunity mofos here at CiK and I will always (or sometimes, anyways) give credit where credit is due.

A few days ago, pictures surfaced of three shoes customized by “RoyaleFam”. As we all know, everyone cool and/or interesting nowadays is part of collective (i.e. “JGoods & Co.”!) and although I’m not entirely sure who all is involved in RoyaleFam, their key shoe customizer is SBTG. And I imagine the rest of the crew is rounded out by whoever puts together the shoe “customizations” he comes up with.

The reason I put “customizations” in quotes is because saying these shoes are “customized” is like saying Dr. Romanelli customizes Nike jackets. The shapes of these shoes are still there, and the general idea of the original is still present, but they basically aren’t even Nikes anymore. So much so that I’m not even sure why he keeps the Swoosh logo. (Well I do know “why”, but you get my point.)

Let me get to the pics before I go any further.

Now, I would never wear any of the above shoes, because I find them incredibly strange and somewhat hideous, but I have to commend the RoyaleFam folks for the attention to detail that obviously went into these. From the selvedge denim to the dog tags, there is a lot to take in. I’m sure they’ll be sold at some ungodly price, and why shouldn’t they be? It’s obvious that a good deal of thought and lot of effort went into getting these made. I may find them fucking odd and unwearable, but I certainly can respect the craftsmanship. They are definitely thinking outside the box.
